St. Patrick's Cathedral

St. Patrick's Cathedral, located on the outskirts of the capital city of Bridgetown, was the first Roman Catholic Church in Barbados and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgetown. In 2011, St. Patrick’s was designated as part of the island’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site: Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison.

Originally built in 1848, St. Patrick's was virtually destroyed by a fire in 1897, suspected to have been started by Protestant elements. A new church, however, was completed two years later, dedicated on March 17, 1899, and consecrated on August 23, 1903. St. Patrick’s was the only Catholic church serving the Catholic community in Barbados up until 1954 when the first of six additional parishes was established.

Built in the Gothic architectural style, St. Patrick's Cathedral features a hammer beam ceiling, beautiful stained glass windows and heraldic plates of the English and Irish regiments who were stationed at St. Ann’s Fort nearby. St. Patrick’s was raised to cathedral status in 1970 with the creation of the Diocese of Bridgetown. On the grounds of the Cathedral stand the church cemetery, the presbytery, a peaceful prayer garden and the St. Patrick’s Primary School.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a symbol of the dedication and faith of the Catholic communities in Barbados who, despite obstacles in the early years, continue to persevere in faith, unity and service to God and country.
